Abortion Statistics: What They Really Say?

Abortion Statistics

Facts and data are important, but far more crucial than the facts themselves is the story they tell. When it comes to abortion, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Interestingly, many states are not required to submit their data. The main source for these statistics is the Guttmacher Institute (GI) – a research and policy organization – their research is trusted on both sides (although they are openly a pro-abortion organization). Live Action is an alternate source of data, and they also rely on data from the Guttmacher Institute.

As of 2020:

  • Average age of a woman obtaining an abortion: 20-29 years old
  • Average age of fetal gestation: 6-9 weeks
  • The vast majority of abortions take place in an abortion clinic or non-specialized clinic
  • 53% of abortions are medical abortions (abortion pill)
  • 43% bled more than expected
  • 26% bled more than 4 weeks after their medical abortion
  • 39% of women obtaining an abortion are black, 33% are white, and 21% are Hispanics
  • 9.7% of abortions occur out-of-state
  • 1 in 4 women will have an abortion in their lifetime
  • The average cost of an abortion is over $500
  • 50% say “negating language” was used by others as a means to justify a woman’s need for an abortion
  • Since October 2022, there have been fewer than 10 abortions per month in states with bans

Statistics on Regret

  • 77% of women regret their abortion
  • 60% report feeling isolated
  • 38% report feelings of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, or drug abuse

Reasons for Abortion

  • 74% say timing
  • 73% say finances
  • 48% said there wasn’t enough support from their significant other and/or family

While the numbers are interesting, these women aren’t just numbers and data – they’re people. Each number represents millions of stories of heartbreak, difficult decisions, fear, and oftentimes, regret. Women deserve better than abortion. They deserve to have loving people come alongside them in their time of need and support them and their baby.
